Trail Guide, which includes the Discovery Trail on page 3. Unfortunately, the city does not currently have an up to date map for the trail.
New features include:
Connection from Hazelwood Cemetery into Willband Creek Park on Elmwood Drive
Connection from Homestead Crescent to Blue Jay Street north of Westerleigh
Current Trail Warnings:
Full Trans Canada Trail closure between the Discovery Trail at Walter Road & Atkinson Road
Temporary routing & loose gravel conditions on the Discovery Trail through Hazelwood Cemetery
If you are a fan of the trail, but have concerns or hope to see expansions, consider telling the city. Some of our concerns regard maintenance standards including asphalt condition, surface markings. Others include the conditions where the trail meets a major roadway, such as Gladwin or Whatcom Road.
The Trail Guide has this to say:
Discovery Trail is a paved corridor spanning through the community, connecting the East and West sides of Abbotsford. This extensive trail system is perfect for all season activity including walking, running, rollerblading and cycling. The trail system winds through natural habitat and includes areas with forest, ponds, creeks and lush meadows. Interpretive signage along portions of the trail, as well as well-marked lookout spots, make the trail a great place for observing, photographing and learning about the community’s indigenous ecosystem.
Trail: multi-use paved trails with level to moderate grades
Amenities: parking lot, picnic tables, benches, public washrooms
While the trail is primarily paved, some sections are gravel, including sections that were previously asphalt, and others are boardwalk. A few sections feature steep grades.
Trail Etiquette:
Keep right, let others pass
Yield to pedestrians & horses if present
Alert people verbally or with a bell prior to passing them
