Bike Security

Bike theft sucks. These tips can help to reduce the chance of having your bike stolen & increase chances that it’s recovered after a theft.

Register your bike!

The first thing you should do to protect your bike is register it. The reason police auctions have so many bikes are that they can’t be traced to the rightful owner. Project 529 & Bike Index both offer completely free bike registration. Optional registration stickers are available for purchase for both registries.

Reporting & Recovery

Lock your bike!

Securely locking your bike, as well as considering when and where you park it are key to reducing chances of theft.

  • Use quality locks such as a U-Lock, folding lock, or heavy chain

  • Always lock through your frame & at least one wheel

  • Take removable accessories with you

  • Lock to secure objects

  • Do not leave your bike parked outside overnight

If your bike is stolen, report it to the Abbotsford Police Department & to the registry you used to register your bike. These registries should offer a poster you can print or share to help recover your bike. If you locate your bike, do not put yourself in a dangerous situation while attempting to recover it.

Ask for a bike rack

Quality bike racks are vital to enabling active transportation & to keeping your bike secure. If you can’t find anywhere secure to lock you bike at your destination, consider asking for a rack to be installed. You may need to contact a business manager, a municipal department such as Parks or Engineering, or perhaps your own building strata. Asking for a bike rack is an easy step to engage in advocacy and help keep everybody’s bike safe.
